House of Mirrors
Opening the Gate
I don't know what they meant. Could I just ask?
Inside the House
The conversation that hasn't happened
A short message arrives: “Okay.”
One little word. Four letters. And apparently the Mirror has already hired a screenwriter, cast the villain, and commissioned the dramatic music. 😂
Maybe the sender is angry. Maybe distracted. Maybe perfectly content. Maybe balancing groceries and a dog who has developed a strong opinion about the front door.
The message doesn't tell you. That's the missing piece.
Inside the House
Jenny had to discover a different possibility
For someone who once wanted to escape difficult conversations, asking another question wasn't always the obvious next move.
Sometimes Jenny wanted to explain her side immediately. Sometimes she wanted to disappear. Sometimes she could feel herself assembling a whole explanation for what Dan must have meant.
But over time, she began to discover that there was another possibility between silence and a fully formed conclusion.
She could ask.
Not interrogate. Not demand a confession. Just make a little opening where new information might enter.
“When you said that, what did you mean?”
The answer might surprise her. It might not. Dan might not be ready to answer. The Gate was an opening, not a guarantee.
Through Your Lens
Try Jenny's possibility through your lens
Can you remember a time you filled in the missing part of somebody else's sentence?
Would asking have been possible? Safe? Useful? Or would you have chosen space instead?
Maybe your Gate sounds like a question. Maybe it's a conversation tomorrow. Maybe it stays closed. You get to decide what access you want to offer.
Inside the House
A Gate isn't a surrender
Asking doesn't erase the way something landed. You can hear another person's meaning and still disagree. You can learn new information and still need a boundary.
Sometimes the answer is simply, “I don't know.” Sometimes nobody has the words yet.
The small discovery is that a story in your head doesn't have to become the only story available. When it fits your life, you can leave room for someone else to speak for themselves.
Keep Wandering
What caught the light?
Maybe an ingredient fits. Maybe you would try something entirely different. Your next move belongs to you.
