When the Rock Has Layers

You thought you found the Rock. Then you walked around the other side. Well. That's interesting.

Some Rocks introduce themselves very confidently.

HELLO. I AM THE PROBLEM.

Excellent. Very helpful. Thank you, Rock.

Then you spend a little time near it and discover a crack.

You look through the crack.

There appears to be... more Rock.

Of course there is. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sometimes the part that first gets our attention is simply the part we can see first.

You may begin with anger and later notice disappointment underneath it. You may think the Rock is about one conversation and realize the conversation bumped into something much older. You may discover that what looked like one enormous Rock is actually several Rocks sitting extremely close together and wearing one very large trench coat.

Or you may look closer and decide:

Nope. Still one Rock.

All of those are possibilities.

The first story wasn't necessarily wrong

This matters.

When new understanding appears, it can be tempting to look backward and think:

How did I not see this?

But you were standing where you were standing with the information, language, experience, and perspective available to you then.

Later you may have more.

Jenny has seen this happen repeatedly in her own life, but Jedi gave her one of the clearest examples.

For a long time, the visible Rock was the problem Jenny was trying to solve: How do I help Jedi succeed in the world the way I imagined he should be able to?

She trained. She researched. She tried things. She listened to advice. She kept working because she cared enormously and because persistence had helped her solve plenty of problems before.

And all along, Jedi was providing information too.

Not in a tidy memo, unfortunately.

Dogs remain notoriously poor at PowerPoint. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Over time, Jenny could see pieces she could not see at the beginning. What if the question was not only How do I change this? What if part of the Rock was also the future she believed they were supposed to reach? What if listening to Jedi meant allowing his needs to change the story of what success looked like?

Eventually, home became part of the answer. Jedi could be Jedi there.

That later understanding did not mean Jenny had been secretly holding the complete answer years earlier and refusing to look at it.

She learned her way into a different view of the Rock.

And even that does not have to be declared the final, permanent interpretation of every moment that came before it.

Life can keep supplying information.

New layer does not mean old you failed.

Sometimes it means you can see something now that was not available to you then.

Sometimes one Rock contains several pieces

Suppose a friendship changes.

At first the Rock may feel like:

I'm angry about what happened.

Later, perhaps:

Actually, I'm also grieving what I thought this friendship would be.

And then:

Oh. Part of this is fear that the same thing will happen in another friendship.

Those pieces can coexist.

You do not have to choose the One Correct Rock Explanation and submit it to Sassiverse Headquarters by Friday at 4:30. ๐Ÿ˜‚

One experience can hold several truths for the same Traveler.

Sometimes another Rock is nearby

A current experience may bump into an older one.

Maybe today's conversation reminds you of another conversation. Maybe a particular kind of uncertainty feels familiar. Maybe you notice your reaction is carrying more weight than today's event seems to explain.

That connection might matter.

It also might not explain everything.

The Sassiverse does not require you to excavate backward until you locate the Legendary First Rock responsible for your entire personality.

Sometimes a Rock is a Rock.

Sometimes it has layers.

Sometimes there are simply several Rocks on the trail.

And sometimes:

Jeff. We got a big one.

Open Bay 3.

Bring the excavator.

Sassy has been explicitly instructed not to operate heavy machinery. This instruction is under active review by Sassy. ๐Ÿ˜‚

You do not have to excavate everything

Discovering another layer is not an assignment to dig through it immediately.

You can notice something and stop.

You can work with the piece that feels manageable.

You can photograph the metaphorical boulder and leave it outside Bay 3 until another day.

You can decide that one piece is not something you want to examine at all right now.

Curiosity is an invitation.

It is not an excavation order.

If another layer appears... Is this another part of the same story? Is there another Rock nearby? What feels most present right now? Did I learn something I could not have known before? Which pieceโ€”if anyโ€”do I actually want to spend time with today?

And sometimes the Adventure changes because you changed

You may return to the same Rock years later and notice something completely different.

The event did not travel through time and rewrite itself.

You arrived with more trail behind you.

More language.

More information.

More experiments.

Perhaps more confidence in your ability to look without needing to have the entire thing solved.

That is one reason these Sassiverse books are meant to be returned to. A page can feel like a different page when the Traveler reading it is not quite the same Traveler who read it before.

You do not have to understand the whole Rock today. Notice what you can see from where you are standing now.
