A Fence Destination

Different Mirrors

The same landscape can look completely different from two places inside it.

Same House. Different Mirrors.

Different Tolerances Are Information

Imagine crumbs beside the toaster.

One Traveler notices them immediately. Another does not notice them until there are enough crumbs to establish a small civilization.

That difference can become a story very quickly:

“Why don't you care?”

“Why are you so picky?”

“Why am I the only one who sees this?”

But there is another possibility: you may simply have different noticing points.

If one person always wipes the counter at Crumb Level Two, the other person may never encounter Crumb Level Seven and discover, “Oh. Yes. I also prefer the counter without its own ecosystem.”

Not noticing is not automatically the same thing as not caring.

Your Mirror can tell you that a clean space matters to you. It cannot tell you that it must matter to another person in exactly the same way.

You don't have to make someone else's Mirror wrong to ask them to make room for what's in yours.

The Mysterious Knife Fairy

Sometimes Contrast Makes the Invisible Visible

Dan used to wash the knives that could not go in the dishwasher. He did it so consistently that Jenny stopped noticing the work. Clean knives were simply part of the landscape.

Then one week the knives piled up.

Apparently the Knife Fairy was not coming.

Suddenly Jenny could see something that had been there all along: Dan had been doing this.

“I didn't notice you were doing that until it stopped happening.”

“Now I see it. Thank you.”

“What else might one of us be carrying that has become invisible?”

Contrast can show us what familiarity has made invisible.

The Sassiverse has received no official statement from the Knife Fairy's union. 😂

Borrow Some Language

The Sunny Seat May Have Another Door

Different Mirrors do not require one person to surrender what matters to them—or the other person to adopt it as their own.

“A clean space matters to me. I know it may matter differently to you.”

“I don't want my preference to automatically become your responsibility.”

“I'm doing more cleaning than I have room for.”

“How could we handle this in a way that works for both of us?”

“Could we hire a house cleaner?”

“Is there something you care about more that you'd rather carry while I carry this?”

“What possibility haven't we thought of yet?”

The Sunny Seat does not decide which answer is right. It reminds both Travelers that there may be more doors than the two they were arguing about.

Same Vacation. Different Mirrors.

Fences Can Help Before Anything Goes Wrong

Two couples decide to vacation together. Everyone is delighted—and everyone may have just imagined a completely different vacation.

One Traveler pictures breakfast together, excursions together, dinner together, and drinks afterward. Another is thinking, This sounds magnificent. I am going to spend three silent hours every morning reading by the pool.

Nobody has done anything wrong.

“I love traveling with you. I also recharge with quiet time, so I'll probably disappear with a book for a few hours some days.”

“We'd like a couple of evenings for just the two of us.”

“I'd love to do excursions together, and I usually need a quiet day afterward.”

“Could we check in the night before and see what everybody wants tomorrow to look like?”

A Fence can tell someone how to travel with you. It does not always tell them to move away from you.

Sometimes a Fence simply says: I want to be here. Here's what helps me stay here as myself.

Through Your Lens

What Changes When Different Does Not Have to Mean Wrong?

What do I notice quickly that another person may genuinely notice later—or differently?

What matters to me because it matters to me, not because everyone else is required to value it the same way?

Where have I turned a difference in tolerance, preference, or expectation into a story about somebody else's caring or character?

What do I actually know about what is in their Mirror?

What could I say about what is in mine without reaching across and writing theirs?

If neither Mirror had to win, what possibilities might become visible?

You do not need to decide which Mirror is correct. You are noticing what each view makes visible—and what becomes possible when both Travelers are allowed to remain authors of their own experience.
