A Heart Stone does not need to be elaborate, expensive, or perfectly painted. It can be as simple as a stone, a Sharpie, and a few minutes of care.

Start With a Stone That Sparks Something
Sometimes the best Heart Stone begins before the paint comes out.
Look for a stone that reminds you of something.
It might look like a heart, a paw, a face, a hill, a moon, a tiny animal, or another shape that makes you smile.
You do not have to force an idea onto it. Sometimes the stone already suggests where the design wants to go.
Let the stone give you a trail marker.
Smooth stones can be easier to paint and label, but unusual shapes can inspire some of the most memorable designs.
Easy and Affordable
Use What You Already Have
You do not need a studio or a large collection of craft supplies.
Paint
Acrylic craft paint works well. A small starter kit with six basic colors can be enough to create many designs.
Markers
Sharpies and other permanent markers are an affordable alternative to paint pens for words, outlines, and simple designs. They come in many bright and metallic colors.
Labels or Stickers
Add a sticker and/or use a printed Heart Stone label, or simply write the website address on the Heart Stone.
A Paper Bag
Use a paper grocery bag to protect your table while painting, gluing, and sealing.

Choose How You Want to Create
Paint It

Draw or Write It
Use Sharpies, permanent markers, or paint pens when writing and drawing feel easier than using a brush.
Sticker It
Add a sticker, word, symbol, or decorative image and protect it with a compatible finish.
Label It
Attach a printed Sassiverse label with Mod Podge so the finder can learn about the Heart Stone and continue its story.
The purpose is not to prove that you can paint.
It is to leave a trail marker of color, care, imagination, or encouragement for someone to discover.

QR Code or Website Address?
Use a QR Code
QR codes work best on larger, flatter stones where the code can remain clear, high-contrast, and large enough to scan.

For smaller stones, write sassiverse.com directly on the stone or use a website-only label.
Not every printed label needs a QR code.
QR codes may stop scanning when they are printed too small, bent around a curved surface, trimmed too closely, or covered by a thick or cloudy finish.
Choose the label that fits the stone. Do not shrink a QR code just to make it fit.
The finder can still follow the trail by visiting sassiverse.com.
Test every finished QR code with a phone before sharing the stone.
Protect the Paper Trail
How to Attach a Printed Label
Mod Podge helps attach and protect the paper label outdoors so a finder has a better chance of following the trail and sharing the Heart Stone’s story.

Let the Painted Stone Dry
Make sure the painted surface is completely dry before adding the paper label.

Add a Thin Layer of Mod Podge
Brush a thin, even layer onto the area where the label will sit.

Position the Label
Place it carefully and smooth gently from the center outward to reduce wrinkles and air pockets.

Let It Dry
Leave the stone untouched until the Mod Podge is dry and no longer tacky.
Humidity Can Slow Drying
On humid days, Mod Podge may take several days to dry fully.
Do not place the finished surface against paper, plastic, fabric, another stone, or any other object until it is no longer tacky.
If it still feels sticky or soft, give it more time.
Avoid the Stuck-to-the-Bag Surprise
Let It Dry Before You Flip It
After painting, gluing, or sealing one side, let it dry completely before flipping the stone.
If the surface is still damp or tacky, the paper bag may stick to the stone and pull away part of the paint, paper label, or protective finish.
Do not stack, wrap, package, or place stones against one another until every surface is fully dry.
Dry is not always the same as cured. If it still feels tacky, leave it alone a little longer.

Adds a light protective coating over paint, markers, and labels.
Outdoor or UV-Resistant Spray

Choose a finish that is compatible with the paint, marker, sticker, paper, and Mod Podge used on your stone.
Follow the instructions on the specific product, including drying time, curing time, ventilation, temperature, and number of coats.
A Simple Spraying Routine

Use a flattened paper bag or cardboard to protect the surface beneath it.

Carry the Whole Setup Outside
Spray outdoors or in another manufacturer-approved, properly ventilated area.

Apply the Finish
Follow the product instructions for distance, coat thickness, temperature, and weather conditions.

Set a Timer
A timer helps you remember when the stone may be ready for another coat or when it is safe to check.

Let It Cure Completely
Do not flip, wrap, stack, or share the stone until the finish is fully dry and cured.
