A Fence Destination
Look in the Mirror
Before you build the Fence, notice the person it needs to help.
The Question Before the Fence
There Is a Person in There
Kids need you. A parent may need you. Your partner needs something. Work needs something. The dog has apparently never eaten in her entire life.
You may be very good at noticing all of them.
For one moment, the Mirror asks you to notice somebody else.
What do I need right now?
Not what should they do. Not what should they understand. Not how do I keep everyone happy.
Your experience. Your need. Your side of the Fence.
Maybe the answer is space. Rest. Help. Quiet. Twenty minutes. A conversation. No conversation yet. A stopping time. A Gate. A Brick Wall.
Maybe you genuinely do not know yet.
“I don't know yet” is information too.
Worthiness Check
You Do Not Have to Reach the Floor First
Sometimes another person's need is very real.
You can love your kids enormously and need twenty minutes when nobody needs anything from you.
You can sit beside a parent in the hospital, want desperately to be there, and still need sleep, food, a shower, help, or one evening at home.
You can care about your team and still have a human stopping point.
Their need does not erase yours.
You do not become worthy of a Fence only after the breakdown, the blowup, the illness, or the moment your body finally makes the decision for you.
The person in the Mirror gets to matter before they hit the floor.
A Trail Marker from Jenny
Sometimes Love Makes the Fence Harder to See
When Jenny's dad was in the hospital, it was easy to imagine that caring meant going, helping, staying, and putting his needs first every day.
But a human body still has human needs while somebody you love is having a hard time.
Jenny learned something small that became much bigger later: caring for someone does not make you an unlimited resource.
The Mirror might not tell you to leave. It might not tell you to stay. It does not make the choice for you.
It simply makes sure one person has not disappeared from the decision.
You.

Stay in Your Mirror. Stay in Your Story.
You do not need to understand the entire Mirror Tool to use this little piece of it.
“What am I feeling?”
“What do I know?”
“What do I need?”
“What story is playing in my head?”
“What would help me stay myself here?”
Your Mirror can tell you what matters to you. It cannot tell you what somebody else intended, noticed, understood, or should value in exactly the same way.
You don't have to make someone else's Mirror wrong to ask them to make room for what's in yours.
The Mirror does not make the choice for you. It gives you somewhere to look before you decide what kind of Fence—or whether any Fence at all—might help.
If you want to learn the full Mirror Tool and put it in your Backpack, it has a trail of its own.
🪞 Meet the MirrorThrough Your Lens
Has One Person Disappeared from the Decision?
You may be looking at people you love, responsibilities that matter, or needs that are completely real.
Without deciding what anyone else should do, what becomes visible when you turn the Mirror toward your own side?
What am I carrying?
What am I feeling?
What do I need enough room to hear?
What would help me remain myself here?
Maybe you know immediately. Maybe the answer changes tomorrow. Maybe all you can see right now is, “I don't know yet.”
The Mirror is not asking you to choose yourself instead of everyone else. It is making sure you are still one of the people in the picture.
