The Story
The traveler had built a sturdy Gate with three hinges, a latch, and an extremely ambitious coat of purple paint.
For months it worked beautifully. Then the path changed. A new neighbor arrived. The garden grew. The Gate began to catch on a branch every time it opened.
“Well,” said the traveler, “I suppose I chose badly.”
But the Gate hadn't been a mistake. It had fit the path she knew then.
She trimmed the branch, moved the latch, and painted one corner yellow for reasons she couldn't fully explain. The next morning it swung freely again.
A passing fox admired the improvements. “So which version is the real Gate?” it asked.
“The one that works for this stretch of trail,” she said. “Ask me again next season.”
