A Quick Mirror Check

Am I Still in My Own Mirror?

Jenny had worked hard to learn how to stay in difficult conversations.

She had more words now.

She could sometimes keep talking when an earlier Jenny would have wanted to get away as quickly as possible.

And then the process changed.

Sometimes Dan was the one who needed to pause.

Jenny could let him leave the conversation.

But that did not necessarily mean Jenny's mind left with him.

The empty space could fill very quickly.

Why did he walk away?

Does he even care about finishing this conversation?

Is he trying to avoid me?

Does this mean he isn't coming back to it?

Jenny could be sitting alone while an entire second conversation happened in her head.

Dan had taken a pause. Jenny's mind could still keep running.

Jenny started noticing two different things

There was Jenny's experience:

He walked away.

I felt abandoned.

I do not know when we are talking again.

Those things belonged to Jenny.

Then there were the explanations her mind could build in the empty spaces:

He walked away because he does not care.

He is trying to punish me.

He never intended to listen.

Those explanations could feel every bit as real as the things Jenny actually knew.

And maybe one of them was true.

Maybe none of them were.

Jenny did not have to replace a frightening story with a happier one.

She could simply notice that she had crossed from my experience into my explanation of someone else's experience.

The Parachute gave Jenny enough white space to notice the difference between what she experienced and what she had started filling in.

The Mirror was not there to tell Jenny she was wrong

That mattered.

If Jenny felt hurt, the Mirror did not erase the hurt.

If she felt abandoned, the Mirror did not tell her she was silly for feeling abandoned.

If something needed to be talked about later, the Mirror did not make that conversation unnecessary.

It just gave Jenny another question before uncertainty quietly turned itself into certainty:

What do I actually know?

What happened in my experience?

What have I started deciding about what is happening inside Dan?

Jenny did not need answers yet.

The pause could protect the question.

Try Jenny's discovery through your lens

Think about a time when someone else's words, silence, expression, pause, text—or lack of a text—left an empty space.

What did you actually experience?

What did you actually know?

What did your mind begin filling in?

You do not have to replace your story with a nicer one. What changes, if anything, when you simply notice which pieces belong to your experience and which pieces are possibilities about someone else's?

Maybe the Mirror is not your ingredient

Jenny found it useful to separate what she knew from what she was filling in.

You may too.

Or those questions may make you want to throw the Mirror into a lake. 😂

Maybe you need different words.

Maybe you need to write down only what you observed.

Maybe you need to ask the other person later.

Maybe uncertainty itself is the piece you need to learn how to sit beside.

Maybe your process looks nothing like Jenny's.

The ingredient is not “believe a better story.” It is leaving enough room to notice when a story is still a story.

A trail crosses here

This is only the piece of the Mirror that matters to the Parachute: when Jenny was falling, an assumption could become certainty very quickly.

The House of Mirrors is a whole separate Adventure about stories, assumptions, what we know, what we fill in, and the possibilities curiosity can leave open.

You can wander there now, or keep following the Parachute.

Because something else had changed too.

Jenny had become someone who could stay in conversations she once needed to escape.

Dan could sometimes be the one who needed the pause.

If both Travelers could change, maybe the process they had built together had to be allowed to change too.
